An engaging augmented reality app to help inform HCPs on the benefits of biomarker testing.
My role: UX Lead
I focussed on user flows, interaction design, design iteration, and prototyping. I also worked closely with project managers, medical and copywriters, and developers.
Design goal
Our goal was to educate pathologists about biomarker tests and procedures, including specific assays for different tumor types.
Research
AVOIDING GIMMICKS: We aimed for authenticity, steering clear of crafting just another flashy app. It was essential to understand our content deeply to prevent unnecessary complexities.
CRAFTING STORIES USING EXISTING MATERIAL. This deep dive helped us pinpoint the crucial areas we needed to spotlight.
MAKING COMPLEXITY USER-FRIENDLY. To ensure the content was both engaging and easy to grasp, we abstracted the primary testing processes. The result? A user-centric design that maintained scientific accuracy and compliance.
Understanding the pathway
The app zeroes in on specific cancer types of four organ systems, offering users varied exploration pathways. Different paths have unique decisions and tests for specific cancer types.

Wireframes with gestures
Wireframes helped bring more detail to life. We mapped out the gestures a user needed to explore the app.

Final design
Leveraging the immersive capabilities of AR, our design team crafted a translucent interface that offers users a glimpse into the human anatomy without obstructing their view of the surrounding real-world environment.

Key takeaways
The positive work environment greatly boosted our efficiency and morale. Facing a tight deadline for an upcoming conference, promptness and precision were imperative. Open communication, alongside iterative sketching and storyboarding, proved invaluable in steering the project effectively. Prototyping allowed real-time testing and adjustments, ensuring the final product met our standards. In short, success stemmed from a mix of clear communication, timely iterations, and a collaborative atmosphere.
Award
The app garnered significant acclaim, earning us a coveted Pharma Choice Award in 2019.
